A Playroom Makeover, Part FINISHED!

We are finally done with the playroom makeover. Remember this - our boring, poorly arranged, cluttered mess?

I'm so happy with the final result.

It is amazing what a little color on the walls can do.

These pictures were taken at night so the color looks a little different.

Notice the Javis Davis floor pillows.
Brown and gold minkee here and a red chenille in the other corner.
At just $55.00 each these made a great addition and add more color and texture.

The huge TV you see in these pictures was not a new purchase. Actually, this is our old TV that has been sitting in storage for a while since it started a loud humming noise and we bought a new one. After doing a little research online, my husband found out that it needed a new color wheel. Just a few hours of time and a $200.00 part and our old TV is as good as new. We are loving movie nights in the playroom now!

Vintage Cowboy

Generally I think it is a good idea to avoid most "themes" when working on a nursery, but one exception to this thought, and maybe this is just a Texas thing, is a good western themed design.

I believe creating a good western theme nursery requires you to steer clear from all the cartoonish and kitschy western fabrics, but yet not be too sophisticated and masculine. Javis Davis has made it easy with their new selection of tasteful, rich fabrics in the Vintage Cowboy collection.

One big advantage of using a western theme in your baby's nursery is the ability for almost all of the accessories and wall art to grow with your child. I used a western theme in my son's nursery and now that he is almost five years old we haven't changed a thing in his room other than taking out the crib and moving in a full size bed.

I recently updated his bedding using fabrics from the Vintage Cowboy collection. The coverlet is Indigo Blue Chenille and the Euro Shams are Lodge Stripe with Indigo Blue Chenille welting.

I was able to incorporate these fabrics with our existing bedskirt. This bedskirt was originally the crib skirt my mom lovingly sewed for me back when I was expecting my baby boy, 5 years ago! (sob...I can't believe how fast five years have blown by)

When I moved my son to his big boy bed I just pieced together all four sides of the crib skirt into two larger sections to fit a full size bed. Since the bed is pushed up against the wall you do not see that the skirt is missing on the wall side and the headboard side. Re-use and recycle!

Thank you to all that came by to visit me this past weekend at Wolf Fest at EP Rayzor Elementary and at the Lantana Ladies League Vendor's Bazaar at the Golf Club in Lantana. It was so much fun meeting some new ladies in my community. I had a great time sitting next to Mary-Kay from Keeps Me in Stitches and Valerie from Not So Plain Jane at Wolf Fest.

When it was time for my son to start solid foods I was so excited to get out our brand spanking new highchair. As a first time rookie parent, I thought "why do we need to bother with these safety straps?", they seemed nothing more than a nuisance... a waste of time. So what did I do? I cut them off! A Playroom Makeover, Part 1

It's been four years since we moved into our house and our neglected playroom needed a serious makeover. With shorter and cooler days approaching, I know that we will be spending more time in the playroom so I decided now is the time to get the ball rolling and get this room finished. Especially since we are now a two kid family which equals twice the junk... I mean toys!
My inspiration for the room came from this fabric (Apache Brick).
I was at Calico Corners one day shopping with a friend of mine and I was immediately drawn to the colors in this fabric. The colors are consistent with the rest of our house, and I thought it would look great in the playroom. I had my neighbor make a window cornice using this fabric, and I matched the wall color with the blue stripe. We used Benjamin Moore 2135-50, Soft Chinchilla.
As with most playrooms, we were in desperate need for additional storage so I was extremely happy to see this media center on sale at Pottery Barn Kids.It is normally $1,149.00, but is currently on sale for $689.99. What a deal! I've ordered it in Espresso to match the Espresso activity table that we already have. For additional toy storage, I have also purchased an inexpensive 5 ft long, two shelf bookcase from a local unfinished wood furniture store. I plan on painting the bookshelf a brick red color which I think will look great up against the blue walls.

To add a few finishing touches, I'm using floor pillows from Javis Davis in these fabrics.

Custom Wall Letters

Hand painted wall letters are an affordable way to make a big impact on a wall, and it is especially cute over a crib. Okay burb mommas you no longer have to make a trip to the big city to find unique toys for your little one. As you all know the last thing we want to do is fight the traffic down 407 or 2499 to get to Frisco, Dallas or Southlake, and now you don't have to. Right around the corner we have the most incredible new toy shop. Brilliant Sky Toys just opened at the Shops of Highland Village and you must check it out. This is a specialty toy store where you will find interesting, educational and one of a kind toys.

The atmosphere in this toy shop is incredible and the people are so helpful. Your kids will go wild in this interactive store that is divided into sections, such as art, imaginary play and dress up, a picket fence doll house area, science and nature, outdoor play, infant/todder area, reading, music and building and construction. You will find quality brands here such as Melissa and Doug, Bruder, Playmobil, Erector, Schleich, ImagiBricks and these are just to name a few.
I don't know about you but I get a little tired of same old, same old the big retail chains have to offer. The next time you need a birthday gift or a little something to brighten your childs day, head to Brilliant Sky Toys. They have something to offer in every price range. I know where we will be doing our Christmas shopping this year!

Handmade 1st Birthday Party

I'm doing my best to avoid the "theme" birthday as long as I can. I know it is only a matter of time that we will be all about Spiderman and Disney Princesses when it comes to birthday parties, but for now mommy gets to decide on the details. And, I must admit...I really enjoying every minute of it - everything from making invitations, decorations and even baking the cake.

So recently for my daughter's 1st birthday I decided to have a cupcake party. While working on the invitations I searched the internet for free cupcake clipart, but all the free stuff I found was pretty lame. Then I decided to search Etsy, and I found this cupcake clipart for $1.00!
The cupcake clipart was my inspiration to do a pink and turquoise theme for the invitation and all of the decorations.
Back when I first started planning and getting ideas for the party I ran across an Etsy shop called Golden that had the most adorable custom bibs and birthday hats. I bookmarked the site planning to come back to order one of the cute little custom 1st birthday bibs, but when I came back to order there was an announcement that all orders would not be shipped until 4-5 weeks out. Yikes! I did not plan that far in advance. I couldn't find anything else like these adorable bibs, so I thought "I can make this". And I did. And it turned out great. And I was surprised! Really it was pretty easy. I won't go into step-by-step instructions, but if anyone is interested just send me an email.

The birthday party was a success, and I'm only crying a little bit that my baby girl is now a toddler.

I have always enjoyed running, but it wasn't until after having my first baby that I really started getting into running. It was my way to get out of the house and get some fresh air while getting a great workout, all without the need for a babysitter...my baby boy was quite content as long as that stroller was moving. When I first started shopping for a jogging stroller I wasn't sure if I would stick with it so I did not want to shell out the big $$$ for a new stroller. I headed to a local kids consignment store and bought a used jogging stroller for $45.00. Over time I began to hate that stroller! I was constantly trying to correct the steer as it pulled to the right. I logged a lot of miles on that worthless stroller.

Fast forward four years later to when I had just had my second baby. I was ready to hit the pavement again, but there was no way I would battle that second hand stroller again. I searched the web I found an incredible deal on a BOB Sport Utility D'Lux jogging stroller. I paid just under $300.00 for a "last years model".

This thing is the Mercedes-Benz of jogging strollers. It was a bit of a splurge but after searching craigslist I realized that when I am done with my awesome new BOB stroller I will probably be able to sell it and recover about 40 to 50 percent of my investment.

Basically if you are looking for a stroller for casual walks through the neighborhood pick up a second hand or inexpensive jogging stroller. If you are serious about running go ahead and spend the extra money...you won't regret it.

One of many fabrics debuting at Javis Davis is the new Java Pear collection. For the mom out there trying to steer clear of traditional pink and blue, but yet not go too modern, this is a great option. The little green elephant in this print is just adorable, and I think this would look great with a dark wood crib in either a baby boy or girl nursery. It's also an option if you want to keep the gender a surprise (not that I could ever do such a thing!).

Small Fry Children's Clothing in Denton, Texas is such a great place to find unique clothing and accessories for your little one. With brand names such as Baby Nay, Baby Lulu, Biscotti-Kate Mack, Le Top, (the list goes on and on), you are sure to find something adorable that you can't live without.
Considering the ups and downs of our economy over the last several decades, Small Fry has really stood the test of time. They will soon celebrate their 40th year in business under the watchful eye of the original owner, Nancy Cole. She must be doing something right because customers keep coming back again and again. The customer service is superb and you feel like you are part of the family when you enter the small little store located at the corner of Sunset and Anna Street in Denton (just off University Drive).

I always turn to Small Fry when looking for a special outfit for my baby girl, and also back when my son was little. I must say that little girl clothing is definitely the focus here. You'll find that in the section containing newborn to 12 month size all of the clothing is pretty equally divided between boy and girl, but once you get into the big room the focus is all girly girl...lots of dresses, bows, headbands, tights, bloomers, hats...you name it!

What is really incredible is that my mom used to shop at Small Fry for my clothing back when I was a little girl. I still remember our special trips there for new "school clothes".

And while it feels great to support such a wonderful, long standing local business, it feels even better to get a great deal. Small Fry's regular prices are better than anything I've found online. To give an example, I found a Baby Biscotti Christening gown for my daughter at Small Fry with a regular retail price of $86.00. The best deal I could find online for the same dress was $100.00 + shipping.

Create your own inspiration board

Inspiration boards are a great tool to help you visualize and create the look you are going for in a room. If you haven't mastered a graphics program like Photoshop, I've found a much easier way of creating your own inspiration board on a website called Polyvore. Polyvore is a free web-based application that allows you to drag and drop items from your favorite websites to create virtual inspiration boards such as the Coral Vine board listed below.

Polyvore will save the board you create and it will also save useful information next to the board such as product description, source website and price.

Here's more information about how it works. The general layout reminds me a lot of Flickr. All in all I have found it very addictive, fairly easy to use and best of all...free!

When I'm asked for my opinion about must have baby items my number one answer is always - INVEST IN A GOOD ROCKER OR GLIDER.

It is really incredible how much time you will be parked in that chair during your baby's first year of life. From my rough calculations I would say I spent approximately 720 hours in my rocker during the endless nursing sessions and sleepless nights of those first three months alone. And even after the first year you will spend plenty of nights curled up with your toddler reading Good Night Moon for the umpteenth time, or rocking your three year old for hours on end when they are not feeling well. A comfortable rocker is a must!

You might want to try to pick out a fabric that is neutral enough to use with a second baby or that will grow with your child into their big boy or big girl rooms.

But even if the fabric you choose for baby #1 does not work for baby #2 you can always have it recovered. My rocker was initially a denim fabric for my son's nursery which was a western theme, then for $250.00 (plus fabric) I was able to have it recovered in a green chenille for my daughter's room.

A good glider or rocker is an investment, but in my opinion is well worth the money.

It seems that there are more and more eco-friendly baby products available that inspire creativity and involve less and less P-L-A-S-T-I-C, but I have found a one-stop shop Kangaroo Boo. Most of their toys are made in Europe, but many are made here in the good ol' U S of A. You can browse their website by country of origin, and they even have a category labeled "not made in China". I love it!

Bookcase re-do

Back when I was decorating my daughter's nursery I wanted a bookcase in one corner of the room. I found this one and fell in love.
But I was not in love with the price tag...$1,150.00.

I know that in a few years we'll end up buying all new "big girl" furniture and I'll want all the pieces to work together. I wasn't willing to make this kind of investment not knowing if it would work in the room in the future.

So one day while at my local Target I ran across this bookcase.
Kind of plain but the price was right, just $89.99.

I decided to buy it and try to "dress it up" a little. Once I got the bookcase home and started putting all the pieces together I realized that the back piece was made out of a flimsy cardboard type of material. So instead of attaching that piece I went to Lowe's and had a piece of wainscoting cut to the same size as the cardboard piece. Then I painted the wainscoting with a sage green color I had used in other areas of the room. After attaching the wainscoting it made the whole bookcase seem a lot sturdier and gave it a much better look. Then I decided to also paint the drawer front using the same green, and I attached a new hand-painted drawer knob.

I was pleased with the end result, and especially the price...less than $100.00.

Who is Javis Davis?

When I was pregnant with my first baby I remember searching all over for the perfect crib bedding. I knew I was having a boy and I’d easily decided on a western theme in his room. Unfortunately, I did not know about Javis Davis at that time, or I would have designed this and had it shipped right to my front door:

Instead, I drove all over the metroplex to some of the upper-end boutique shops, but there was no way I was going to spend $700.00 for bedding that would only be used for a couple of years. My only other option was the “bed-in-the-bag” sets from the big retailers, but there was no way I would settle for that for my sweet baby boy. Luckily my mom is a great seamstress and together we sewed most of my son’s bedding. It turned out great and we had a wonderful time working on it together, but it was a lot of work and took a lot of time!

A few years later I saw an ad for Javis Davis on one of my favorite blogs. I wasn’t pregnant at the time, but I spent some time on their website looking at all of their wonderful fabrics. I loved the concept of being able to design my own crib set, and their prices were reasonable. I bookmarked the site hoping that someday I would be able to use them if we were fortunate enough to have a second child.

When I found out in the spring of 2008 that we were having a girl I was ecstatic. Immediately I started designing my crib bedding on the Javis Davis website. Working with a pink and green fabric collection I designed my daughter’s bedding.
I was shocked when UPS delivered my order to my door about 5 days later! I was so impressed with the quality, quick turn around and amazing customer service at Javis Davis.

Needless to say I became a huge fan of Javis Davis and spread the word to everyone I knew that might be looking for custom bedding. So when I received an email from Javis Davis in January stating that they were looking for design partners I jumped at the chance. I spent the weekend filling out their application, and couple of weeks later I received a call from the owner of Javis Davis inviting me to become a design partner. I was thrilled!

As a design partner, I am able to bring all that Javis Davis has to offer directly to moms in my community. The Javis Davis website has an amazing design configurator where you can see your crib design online. While the configurator is a great tool, there is nothing like being able to see, touch and feel the fabrics in person. As a design partner, I also have access to additional online design tools and I also have samples of all the fabrics Javis Davis has to offer.
